Co-op Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Co-op Update on Coronavirus (COVID-19)

Breadroot to Close One Hour Early Monday – Saturday, Sunday Hours Changed to Facilitate Deep Cleaning

March 18, 2020

Breadroot Natural Foods Co-op has been paying careful attention to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak that has been classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. Our goals during this outbreak are to help protect people who are most vulnerable and to maintain business operations so that the community has a source for food.

Actions that we have taken help prevent the spread of COVID-19 include: increasing the frequency of cleaning and sanitation that occurs at the Co-op, decreasing the amount of personal contact in unnecessary situations, and creating plans for emergency deep cleaning. We also have a generous sick pay plan for all staff, including part-time staff, where sick pay is issued upon hire.

The high customer demand in our co-op makes it difficult to both provide service and keep the store clean. Many grocery stores have taken the step to improve this by reducing store hours so that their staff can deep clean more regularly. We also have decided to take this step. Starting March 19th, Breadroot will close an hour early on most days and have changed hours for Sunday. Our open hours will temporarily be:

Temporary Open Hours:

  • Monday through Saturday, 9am – 7pm
  • Sunday, 10am – 6pm

Furthermore, the availability of high-demand and staple products on a regional and national level continues to face logistical problems. We are doing our best to ensure that our shelves are full of food for the community. It appears we will be getting normal deliveries of most food items on the normal schedule, however we’ve had to make some temporary changes to our online order policy. If you use our online orders, you will see this change when you log in.

We plan on keeping the co-op open throughout the global pandemic. Thank you for your understanding and for supporting the Co-op,

In cooperation,

Jeffrey Thouron General Manager Breadroot Natural Food Co-op

Breadroot to Remain Open During Outbreak, Special Precautions Being Taken

March 16, 2020

However, the availability of high-demand products on a regional and national level is a serious issue. We are doing our best to ensure that our shelves are full of food for the community. It appears we will be getting normal deliveries of most food items on the normal schedule, but it is likely that items like toilet paper and hand sanitizer will be out-of-stock for at least a week or more.

During this time, some actions that we have taken will directly affect you, the customer. These include:

  • We cannot fill re-used kombucha bottles. In the meantime we have 12oz coffee cups for on-tap kombucha. (You may also purchase and fill new bottles.)
  • We have suspended passive sampling at the store. You may see active sampling, where the staff member gives out a sample, rather than unattended food left out in sample areas.
  • The reusable bag donation will exclude the use of beans (it will still be recorded at the point-of-sale). The donations will be split evenly between WAVI and Feeding South Dakota.
  • When supplies of toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and other high-demand items do arrive, we will ration them until the market stabilizes.

We plan on keeping the co-op open throughout the global pandemic. Thank you for your understanding and for supporting the Co-op,

Jeffrey Thouron General Manager Breadroot Natural Food Co-op

Member Owner Appreciation Day Cancelled

March 12, 2020

Breadroot Natural Foods Co-op has been paying attention to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak that has been classified as a pandemic by the World Health Organization. We are issuing this communication to inform our member-owners, customers, and vendors of our decision to cancel the Member-Owner Appreciation Day celebration on Saturday, March 14, 2020.

The safety of our customers and staff is a top priority at the Co-op, and COVID-19 presents a special risk to the most vulnerable members of our community. Member-Owner Appreciation Day attracts a large gathering of people for the purpose of a celebration, and such a large gathering heightens the risk of virus transmission. Therefore, we have cancelled the event so that we can focus on our core mission: to provide our essential grocery and natural health products to our customers without needless risk. In addition to this cancellation we have taken additional health and safety precautions that you may notice around the store. If you would like specific information about the steps the Co-op is taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the store, please reach out.

The Co-op has another Member-Owner Appreciation Day in May where we can celebrate. In the meantime, stay safe.

Thank you for your understanding and for supporting the Co-op,

Jeffrey Thouron
