Rx: Read

"Prescription: Read" is a monthly book discussion program designed to give participants the knowledge needed to protect and improve their health and the health of their families. Each month a book and topic is selected for its potential to address important health issues of the community.

Heather Margaret, MD, developed the program in response to the need she saw for addressing health problems with the most powerful "medicine," knowledge.

"I would see people coming to the office thinking they needed prescriptions for more and more pills, but health does not come from taking medicine. Health comes from healthful living. Too many people have grown dependant on taking pills to suppress their symptoms and no longer really know what it takes to be really, truly healthy. By bringing attention to various books and providing a forum in which they can be discussed and all questions answered, I hope to help people be better prepared to make healthy choices."

The books will vary from month to month, and will cover topics relevant to all ages and a variety of issues. Participants are welcome to suggest a topic they feel is important to the needs of the community. "I'd like people to get involved in questioning and discussing the books. It is only when an issue is really understood that people will be willing to make any effort to change the usual way they do things--and moving toward health requires effort and
change."

The series was previously sponsored by Brule County Food Club and hosted by Cozard Library in Chamberlain. It has moved with Dr. Margaret to the Black Hills region and will now be sponsored by Breadroot Co-op. The series will resume sometime in April at a time, date and place yet to be determined. Anyone interested is encouraged to contact the store with scheduling suggestions.

Dr. Margaret is open to setting up additional sessions for the meeting if needed.
