More about the Move
Breadroot Members,
The Breadroot Board of Directors has recently been informed that the building we are currently in will be razed sometime in late summer or fall of 2007. There is an option to move into the building next door (currently occupied by
Independent Optical). This would entail a wait of unspecified length while the building the Breadroot is in is torn down, a new building is built, and Independent Optical moves out of their current location into the new building.
This process is expected to take at least a couple of months. During this time, the Breadroot store would need to find storage space for everything in the store.
After much discussion, the Board of Directors decided that closing the Breadroot store for two or more months is unacceptable, and thus has decided that moving the store to a different location and keeping the doors open is in the
best interest of Breadroot. In fact, after the inital shock of the necessity of moving wore off, we became rather excited by the possibilities.
You see, our current location limits the Breadroot from expanding in several directions that many Members have shown interest in. In the right space, expansion possibilities could include a walk-in cooler, a whole aisle of bulk bins, various ethnic-food sections, a climate-controlled room similar to that which Veggies had, a supplement section, a
consignment section, and more. It's really up to you to decide. Right now any of these options are NOT options due to the size and layout of the building we are in.
The Breadroot store has moved twice since its inception, and both moves were rather short-notice operations. This time around, we have some room to discuss, feel out, and choose a space that not only meets our current needs, but is also an improvement over the space we are currently in.
We would like to have this move completed and the store opened by June. In order to do this, we need to get started now. There is much work to do. The first step is finding a new location. After a location is found, we can start
modifying the space to meet the needs of the store, and planning the transfer of inventory and equipment. If we get a good plan in place, Breadroot should only have to be closed 2-3 days.
The Directors feel that because we are a Cooperative, we need the membership body to help decide the fate of Breadroot. We do not have the resources OR the staff to do this alone! We are asking your help in deciding where to
move. If you are interested in helping choose the next location of the Breadroot store, please meet Fran Linn at the time and location specified above (in "The Short Rap")
and participate in the discussion forum.
Thank you, and may your smiles be filled with little green bits of kale.
Eric K., Director, Breadroot Cooperative
