You Eat What?!?
A practical food-centered nutrition series
by Heather Margaret,MD
Eating right isn't easy, despite the flourishing of choices we have today. By shopping at Breadroot, you've solved the problem of where to get good food, but just what is good? More to the point, what that is good can I stand to eat? How often, and for how long?
Eating healthily requires more than just changing your shopping habits. Buying natural and organic foods is a good start but it is only a first step. Completing the transition requires eliminating meat and dairy and refined sugars and grains, minimizing the use of heavily processed foods and ideally even eliminating cooked foods. Such apparently radical restrictions can quickly lead one to wonder, what is left?
The answer is plenty, though it is likely to be unfamiliar, and even downright unusual. "You Eat What?!?" will become a familiar response to your answers to these same questions from others. Changing to a healthy diet requires research and practice and not least of all time and patience.
For those not immediately ready to commit to a life of fresh-fruit-only breakfasts and bowls of greens for dinner, yet still wanting to make a change for the better and not sure where to start, we present this series by Dr. Heather Margaret, Family Physician and Breadroot Co-op member. Each article will present one idea for a healthy and appetizing meal that can serve as either an intermediate goal in beginning to make a complete transition to a healthy diet or worthy end in itself as good compromise between practical and ideal. Each article includes complete preparation instructions as well as a detailed nutrition analysis and a general discussion of its merits to help guide your own decisions about the rest of your diet.
